Photography

A few years ago I sold my motor bike and bought a Cannon EOS. One of the best decisions I’ve made! Riding a motor bike is a strange communion with nature and technology so is photography. Riding a motor bike heightens your senses to your environment so also is photography. Riding a motor bike is fantastic for clearing you head so photography is a form of meditation with eyes wide open.

I don’t “take” photos as I believe that would be stealing rather I am invited into a relationship with what see.

William Blake  described it best when he said, “This life’s dim windows of the soul distorts the heavens from pole to pole and leads us to believe a lie when you see with, not through, the eye.” and in Auguries of Innocence, “To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour.”

I’m also fascinated with the concept of time and photography.

A photo is simply a capture of time that now no longer exists. It’s gone! You can capture it in memory or in digital form but it is no longer present,  it is now in another form, re-present. It represents another time and place in the present. A photo then is not so much about the photo-graph but about the story of the photographer and the viewer  as present to the scene that is before them.

The most important question in photography then, is not about the graphic but the experience past , present and future of the one who is viewing. “When we engage with the landscape, we are surely enriched and stimulated by a greater force: perhaps we take a step closer to the source of things.” Charlie Waite
